1h trend / 5m entry
Typical Hold
1 - 6 hours
Primary Targets
- •Prior swing high/low
- •2R extension

Late-stage trend exhaustion — pullback becomes reversal
When to Avoid
- •Range-bound markets
- •Deep retracements (>1.5x ATR)
- •Trend exhaustion signals
The Concept
In trending markets, price doesn't move in a straight line — it moves in impulses and corrections. This strategy waits for a pullback to key moving averages (EMA20/EMA50) and enters when price shows signs of resuming the trend.
Key Insight: The best pullback entries come when the higher timeframe (1h) trend is clearly established. You're buying dips in uptrends and selling rallies in downtrends — going WITH the trend, not against it.
Long Pullback Setup (Uptrend)
Buy the Dip — Pullback to EMA in Uptrend
Price pulls back to EMA20/50 in an established uptrend. A higher low forms, then price closes back above EMA — entry signal.
Short Pullback Setup (Downtrend)
Sell the Rally — Pullback to EMA in Downtrend
Price rallies back to EMA20/50 in an established downtrend. A lower high forms, then price closes back below EMA — entry signal.
Trend Confirmation
1h trendState = UP (for long) or DOWN (for short)The higher timeframe must show a clear trend direction. This is your directional bias.
Pullback Depth
pullback_depth ≤ 1.2 × ATR(14)Shallow pullbacks are preferred. Deep retracements may indicate trend weakness.
Setup Detection
- 1h Trend— trendState = UP or DOWN
- Pullback target— Price touches EMA(20) or EMA(50)
- Pullback depth— ≤ 1.2× ATR (shallow preferred)
- Structure— Higher low (long) / Lower high (short)
Trigger & Targets
- Long trigger— 5m close back above EMA(20)
- Short trigger— 5m close back below EMA(20)
- Target 1— Prior 5m swing in trend direction
- Target 2— 2R or next 1h swing level
When It Works
Clear trending markets with defined higher highs/lows (uptrend) or lower highs/lows (downtrend). Best with strong 1h momentum.
Watch Out For
Late-stage trends that may be exhausted. If the pullback is too deep (>1.5x ATR), the trend might be reversing.
Avoid When
Range-bound markets, major support/resistance levels nearby, or when 1h trend shows signs of exhaustion.
Structure Confirmation (The Key Filter)
The higher low (for longs) or lower high (for shorts) is crucial. It shows that buyers/sellers are stepping in before price reaches the prior extreme:
Long Pullback Confirmation
- 1h trend = UP (higher highs, higher lows)
- 5m price pulls back to EMA(20) or EMA(50)
- A higher low forms on 5m
- 5m candle closes above EMA(20) → Entry
Short Pullback Confirmation
- 1h trend = DOWN (lower highs, lower lows)
- 5m price rallies back to EMA(20) or EMA(50)
- A lower high forms on 5m
- 5m candle closes below EMA(20) → Entry

Quality score is calculated from regime alignment, structure quality, timing, and technical confluence. Higher scores indicate stronger setups.
Why This Strategy Works
Market Psychology
- In uptrends, institutions use dips to accumulate
- EMAs act as "dynamic support/resistance"
- Higher lows = buyers willing to pay more each time
Risk/Reward
- Tight stop below the higher low swing
- Target = prior swing high (often 2-3R)
- Trend continuation gives extended targets
Invalidation & Risk
Stop Loss Placement
- Long: Below the pullback swing low - buffer
- Short: Above the pullback swing high + buffer
Buffer = max(spread × 2, ATR × 0.1) to avoid noise
Trade Invalidation
- Price breaks below the pullback low (long)
- 1h trend state changes to RANGE or opposite
- Pullback exceeds 1.5× ATR (trend weakness)
